October 31, 2015

Bob: I can't believe the month of October is gone. It seemed to go on forever in my mind, but tomorrow we start November. And we get to sleep in an extra hour. Probably don't need an extra hour as we didn't get up till after 8 today. By the time I did my morning routine and walked on the treadmill for an hour it was 11:15. We then went to the temple. After the temple we thought we would make a quick stop at the grocery store and Walmart. Were we surprised. There were as many shoppers today as there usually are at Christmas. Halloween must be a big holiday here and everyone waited till the last minute to go buy their candy. Bonnie stopped at a shop to get some balloons and the people were lined up inside the store the whole length of the store. She passed on that one.
After we got home and ate we and 4 other couples went up to the Barrett's apartment at 7:00 to wish Sister Clayton a happy birthday. She didn't know we were coming. It was a fun evening chatting with the senior missionaries. We're all getting together Monday night again at the Ludlow's monthly dinner for the seniors. The Ludlow's have been feeding the senior missionaries on the first Monday of each month for 25 years now. We are buying them theater and dinner tickets as a surprise thank you.
Our granddaughter, Hannah, had a car accident Friday and is in the hospital. She lost a couple teeth and has some facial cuts and injuries, but will be alright. She will be in the hospital for a while.
Love to all and good night brother.
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  We are fasting for Hannah tomorrow. She looks so sore with her cuts and bruises in the picture that Joey sent us. Apparently, she rolled her car. We don't know the details yet, but she needs our prayers.
We accomplished a lot today, for which I'm grateful. We did endowments for two of Bob's ancestors in the temple today. And we were the witness couple again! It was crazy shopping, that's for sure. I couldn't believe the long lines everywhere we went. I was able to get everything I needed, though, which is a miracle. We had an enjoyable evening. Each of us shared our favorite experience so far on our missions. I had to share two, though. I couldn't help it. I feel very, very blessed.
Let's all have a worshipful Sabbath tomorrow and honor our Savior in all we do. We love you all.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

October 30, 2015

Bob: Oh what a day. Started by taking the truck and cargo trailer to some Elders in North York so they could move their apartment tomorrow and the Sisters' apartment on Tuesday. They are supposed to bring everything back on Wednesday when we have MLC. Hope all goes well for them.
In the afternoon I called the leasing agent for our apartment building. On Wednesday they told me they had vacancies coming up by the middle of the month. I told them I needed one for Nov 16. They said the'd email the application and accompanying paperwork right over. Well, I was still waiting for it. I made about half a dozen calls before someone took the time to get the paperwork sent over.
After work the Ericksons and us decided to go to RD's Southern BBQ. We had some mail that had come in for President Clayton so Bonnie called to alert him about it. He said to bring it with us and they would meet us at RD's. So all 6 of us went. I'm trying to get pictures from them to show you what we had. The owner of the place came out and talked to us for a while. He asked about the missionaries and their not stopping at his restaurant for Thanksgiving. President Clayton explained that almost all of them spent Thanksgiving with some members at their homes. The owner went on to say that he knew the missionaries sometimes spent a little too much of their money before the month ended. He said if any of them ever need a meal and can't afford one to come to his restaurant and he would take care of them. President thanked him for his offer. As we left the President and the owner were speaking to each other in French I believe. As they parted both were laughing.
After that Bonnie and I stopped at Walmart to pick up a few things. I had a couple interesting experiences/thoughts while there. For starters, Bonnie gave me a list of things to buy for the office and the first-aid kits for the missionaries. So I did my best at picking out the items listed. Once everything was collected I took them to her for her approval. I did pretty good except for two items. So I said I will go back and get them. She said, "Well I am almost done." Now being a man I assumed that meant I could get the 2 items, meet her at the check out and get out of there. So I went back to the pharmacy and exchanged the 2 items. When I got back to the check out I couldn't find her. So I checked out and headed to the car. When I got to the car she wasn't there. I loaded everything into the trunk, put my cart away and went back to the check out area. Still couldn't find her. Walked all through the grocery department, but still no Bonnie. About that time I got a text from the CES couple. They wanted Bonnie to call them about a party they are having tomorrow night. Texted back I would tell her if I could ever find her, but right now she was lost in Walmart!!
Realized with my phone in hand I could probably find her. She answered that she was in the card section across from the pharmacy. (She purchased 4 cards.) With all this in mind I had a great thought. We have a dollar store that Bonnie loves to shop at. They have small carts you can push around the store. Attached to these carts are long poles that stick up in the air. Why they have them I don't know. But wouldn't it be a marvelous idea to put a flashing light on the poles and then put a harness on the pole that your spouse could wear while she is shopping. That way you can find her!!!!!
The 2nd experience I had at Walmart was while I was checking out. I was facing the cashier so the exit area was behind me. I began to notice a rotten smell like a plugged toilet. I looked around and the restrooms (called washrooms in Canada) were right behind me. So I assumed it was the washrooms that I smelled. Anyway I checked out and walked away from the area. However, the smell wasn't going away! And it didn't go away till I was outside. I told Bonnie that I thought I must have had an accident and didn't even know it, the smell was so strong! But when I went back inside the smell returned. Finally decided to my relief that it was the washroom after all!!
Once I found Bonnie and checked out we made it home without further incident.
Good night to all. God bless and have a wonderful weekend. Good night brother.
Love,
Bob/Dad

Bonnie:  The tall poles on the little carts at the dollar store are so no one can take the carts outside. I didn't worry about Bob finding me because I knew he would call. Men!
I had a full day with interesting things happening. I am dealing with packages from home for the missionaries. I don't know if they are for Christmas or not, so I have been emailing the parents with each one I get. I have two stacks so far--one stack to be delivered Wednesday at MLC and another one with packages that I don't know when to deliver. Time will tell, I guess. I just wish the parents would email me back. Then, a man called me three times trying to get through to the temple to put a name on the prayer roll. He didn't know who else to call. SL was fixing the line but I finally found a number that worked. Then, the uncle of one of our missionaries came in and wanted to know where to go to get candy and treats for his nephew. He came back loaded. I know this missionary and his companion will be happy about that! I texted the President to ask about skyping Farsi/Persian missionary discussions to Calgary. And the answer came back a resounding yes! Then I had one of the best experiences I've had so far on our mission. This morning a young man who looked like he was from India or the Middle East came into the office and asked, "Is this a church?" I said yes and then he asked me if he could go in and pray! This took me by surprise and since I was busy on the phone, Elder Erickson came in and took him into the chapel and talked to him. As a child he had attended a Catholic school. Now his family was having lots of trouble, and since our church is in his neighborhood he decided he would ask us if he could pray at our church! Elder Erickson invited him to church there Sunday. We'll see what happens. The Elders who attend this ward are ecstatic! So, it was a very good day, especially having dinner out with Erickson's and Clayton's. And, to top it all off, Chris called. We will be getting together at Christmas for sure! They only live about 6 1/2 hours away. That really makes me happy!
Well, I've rambled enough. My hope this night is for happiness and peace to all.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Thursday 29 October 2015

October 29, 2015

Bonnie:  It's been another good day and I've been able to accomplish a lot. I'm gearing up for MLC on Wednesday. I now have all of the orders from all of the zones so I can see what we have and what we don't. I could do another order but things come up every day that we need and it won't arrive for about two weeks anyway. If I get my last order delivered I will probably be fine. I hope it comes on time for MLC.
I had an interesting experience today. I got a phone call this afternoon from a senior missionary in Australia. He is teaching a woman who has a brother in Toronto. He's talked to this man several times on the phone and he is interested in the church. When I asked him what time it was in Australia he said 3:30 am! He is so concerned about this man that he called me in the middle of the night! After I entered his information into the church's referral system, I called the missionaries directly to ask if they had received it. They said they hadn't. This makes me sad because obviously there are still glitches in this new referral program. I guess I will just have to call the missionaries directly when there is some kind of personal interest. And I'm going to call  SL, too. They need to fix the system.
Well, the wash is done for the week and the shopping list made. We'll do that tomorrow night. I can't believe how fast the time is going. It's almost November! Have a happy night, everyone.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: Things seem to be going well at the office. There is hardly anything on my desk which makes me feel good as I have the messiest desk in the office. Matter of fact, my office is pretty messy. It doesn't help that the Mission Supply Secretary feels it is her right to place things out of everyone's sight in my office!! She is lamenting now about the Christmas packages she is getting with no place to put them. I'm going to hold out as long as I can though.
Bonnie left the office on time while I stayed to almost 6:30 working on the phone report. I have some information, but don't see how to speedily go through everything. And there just isn't that much time to spend reviewing the information. I can't look at it at home as I still haven't gotten the hard drive replaced on my computer. When I called the supplier he said the first shipment was lost in the mail and that the post office is paying him for the lost merchandise. He is supposed to reship it this week. And 2 weeks later it should arrive.
Had a great dinner tonight. Reheated some potato soup and finished up the caesar salad from last night. We made the soup last Sunday night. It seems to be better every day. There are about 3 more meals left according to the First Mate.
We are planning on going to RDs Southern Barbeque tomorrow night. The owner of the place opened a second location this past summer. We have been to the original restaurant twice, but I want to go to the new one. The Barrett's stopped in earlier this week and the owner came out and talked to them. He told them he missed seeing the Elders stop in for something to eat. He said he knew they didn't have much money to spend eating out, but if they were low on funds and needed something to eat they could stop in any time and he would take care of them. He even mentioned fixing a Christmas dinner for the Elders. We hope to talk to him about that tomorrow night.
Well I had better close and get ready for bed. Love to everyone and good night brother.
Dad/Bob

October 28, 2015

Bonnie:  We did have a good time last night at Institute. Tonight we were home, had dinner and did the dishes by 6:45!!. This is some kind of record for us. We have enjoyed just laying around, doing nothing tonight. There was the possibility of going with the missionaries to an appointment this evening but it didn't work out.
Today at the office I accomplished two big things: a Staples order and ordering the business cards for the ESL classes. It's always so important to get all of the information correct on the cards, and it changes from month to month. I hope next time to have a complete list on one page with the exact details before I start. Maybe I need to "train" these APs a bit better so I can have that each time!
Today Sister Erickson's mother passed away. It was expected, but it is still hard to deal with the loss of someone so dear. They will go to the funeral next week-end, probably leaving a week from tomorrow and coming back Sunday or Monday. It's the same week-end Bob and I are hosting a going away dinner for the Barrett's. That is also the Saturday that the mission asks the new converts to come to the temple to do baptisms for the dead. Bob and I will be playing key roles that afternoon, helping it all run smoothly for the nervous converts as they enter the temple for the first time. As we have written, it's a great experience. It will make for a very busy day, though.
I don't know how many of my children are reading our blog, but I am having huge issues with my ipad and cannot get on facebook. So, if it's important, please email me or call and I will call you back. I hate feeling so out of touch with my children and grand-children!
I will let Bob finish up. Please know of my love for all of you!
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: It is good to get a night off. Just sitting here listening to Grandpa Elliott and 'Playing for Change' on YouTube. There are some really talented people to be found almost anywhere in the world. Take a look at him on YouTube.
I think I was able to take care of the bus passes today. I think we got about 15000. worth! Cheaper than several more cars and paying for parking downtown.
I just deleted FACEBOOK from Bonnie's tablet and downloaded it again. Tried to sign her in but it failed and now we can't find it anywhere.
Been working of the phone/text report some more lately. I am able to review the early and late calls now, but there aren't many of them. Going to try to do the rest of the calls tomorrow to determine if missionaries are calling out of their area, etc. Not looking forward to doing the texts though. That file is about 5 times larger than the calls file. Just doing the calls slows down the computer. I think we need a fast computer.
Been raining most of the day, but it was expected. They said on the news this morning the rain was caused by the recent hurricane. We sure seem a long way from the storm to be affected by it.
Bonnie got some good news today. They are predicting their warmest winter ever in Canada. That comes the year after the coldest winter ever!! We'll see how that plays out.
Well I had better quit for now. Bonnie is trying to call ATT about her tablet. We'll see if that does any good.
Love to all and good night brother.
Dad/Bob

Tuesday 27 October 2015

October 27, 2015

Bob: Another late night. Institute is such a good time to mingle with the YSAs-- you don't notice the time slipping away. Good day at work as the new problems weren't too terribly difficult to deal with. Our CES couple is going home November 12th and we didn't think we were getting a replacement. However, today a name was put on the list for a CES replacement. Will have to scramble around and try and get another apartment in our complex as a temple couple is also coming November 20th. Always seems to be a challenge coming on the horizon.
The Institute lesson tonight was about spiritual crocodiles. They showed a video about a herd of water buffalo being attacked by a herd of lions. One of the buffalo calves is thrown into the water and the lions attempt to drag it out of the water. A crocodile grabs hold of the calf and a tug-of-war commences between the crocodile and the lions. Eventually the lions prevail and drag the calf on to shore. They get ready for a great lunch. About that time the herd of buffalo comes back with a determination to save their calf. They butt the lions, throw one into the air and eventually chase off the lions and save their calf. There is a lot of spiritual significance in this story. Sometimes we have to band together to help save the lost or separated one. Just lots of meaning to this. Think about it for a while and you'll see it too.
First mate says good night and that she will write tomorrow night.
Better get to bed. Love to all, and good night brother.

Dad/Bob

Monday 26 October 2015

October 26,2015

Bob: Don't have much time as we just got home right before 10. Took a young lady home after FHE and the freeway exit was closed. Had to go to the next exit and meander back to where we wanted to be. But it was fun seeing more of the Greater Toronto Area!!
They had a professional dance instructor teaching the YSAs some dance steps tonight for the activity. The dance didn't look too hard but the warm up looked very difficult as they were stretching and running. The Seniors got to be the judges!
Full day at work today as I was trying to get ready to purchase the monthly bus passes. With all the changes it took some time. I think we shut down 4 bus areas from last month and opened up one other one. If it's not right I get calls Monday that they need money to buy a bus pass.
Well I'm hitting the sack. Hope everyone had a great day. Good night all and good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:   It was great fun to watch the YSAs interact with each other. I really wanted to get out there and dance with them, but none of the other Seniors did so I just watched. The Elders had an investigator there tonight. It was good because of the lesson that was taught in FHE. A young man who has been baptized a year taught about how the Lord can change simple, common people into prophets, such as Joseph Smith. Then he said he had been asked to serve in the temple and that he was very humbled by it. His point was that the Lord can take anyone and make them into what He wants if they are willing. I really felt the Spirit as he talked. After the lesson, while the others were learning their dance  moves, this teacher and the investigator talked quite a bit. I feel like it was a great lesson for this young man.
I'm going to bed as soon as I am done with this. Tomorrow is anther very long day. May your days be long and wonderful, too.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Sunday 25 October 2015

October 25, 2015

Bob: It's bed time so I have to write quickly and briefly. When we got up the plans were to pick up 2 YSA in Brampton then go to Mississauga and pick up a third. That meant we would be leaving about 10:30. Well the young lady in Mississauga got another ride so we didn't have to get her. Left a little past 11:10, later than we wanted, and picked up another young lady. Went to get a young man, but he wasn't there. As Bonnie set down in church the counselor stood up to start the service. So we just made it because they always end up starting 2 to 5 minutes late.
Church went well and the 3 speakers were good. The young man that spoke is getting married and so this was his final week in the YSA Ward. Moving on to a family Ward now.
When we got home we decided to make a batch of potato soup. Last summer we made it in Elk Lake, but couldn't find the 1 pound block of Velveeta cheese. Had to cut up the wrapped individual slices to it. We had all the right ingredients today though. Decided to add a new item to the soup-crumbled bacon. Sampled it tonight and my feeling is the bacon is not worth the bother. We'll see if heating the soup up has any effect on that decision.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie: The potato soup is better with the bacon and would be even better if  Bob had let me add the bacon grease along with the cooked bacon! In fact, I'd like to add a bit of it next time we heat up the soup. We'll see.
All of the  Bishop's visits went well today. There was just one person he wanted to see that did not return my call/text this week. But, there are always YSAs who want a last minute visit with him, so his schedule is always full. We have committed to pick up a service missionary, Belinda, who works in the garment distribution center part-time. She lives in Brampton so it is not too far out of our way. We'll take her to church on Sunday and also to the FHE on Monday nights. I think she is happy that we are doing it.
We went to Laura's tonight for some rice pudding dessert. It was good, but especially so because she puts real maple syrup on it. I'm not talking about the maple-flavored stuff commonly on the store shelves. I'm talking about heavenly, 100% pure Canadian Maple Syrup. It's delicious! I will be bringing some home for sure.
I think I am prepared for the office tomorrow. I have our dinner ready to take so that after we eat at the office, we can go straight to Belinda's house and then to FHE. And so begins another week of our adventure in the Canada Toronto Mission. We love you all!

Mom/Bonnie

Saturday 24 October 2015

October 24, 2015

Bob: It has been mostly a rainy day here. Started the day off by walking an hour on the treadmill. The TV in the exercise room is finally working so that helps some. A little over 11 minutes into the walk the electricity went off for a second and I about walked off the treadmill! Glad I was holding on.
We did go out this afternoon though. We found a Canadian Super Store, which is really a discount grocery and much more store. Bonnie was able to buy the special candy bars we give the missionaries on their birthdays. Didn't take time to look for much else as I was interested in going to the outlet mall.
We went to the Vaughn Mills outlet mall which is located on route 400 behind the Bass Pro Outlet. I was able to find the sweaters I was looking for at Van Heusen. After we finished there we walked part of the mall, but it was too big for us. Looking at the map of the place I don't think we saw over 1/4 of it.
As soon as we got home we took a nap. Mine lasted a lot longer than Bonnie's because when I awoke she was in the kitchen preparing cupcakes for Munch 'n Mingle tomorrow.
At 6:30 we went to the Jensen's apartment for a soup dinner. There were 4 temple couples, the Barrett's and their son, Laura, the Ericksons and us. There were 3 different types of soup, various breads, cornbread, plus ice cream and brownies for dessert. It was fun getting together with everyone.
After that we went to Walmart to make some photos for the wall hanging we have been trying to get up since we got here. We just haven't moved too fast on this project.
Better get to bed as it is just after 11. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  Bob has summed up what we did today very well. I'm so glad to get the pictures done for our new wall-hanging. It has space for 18- 4x6 photos, so besides family pictures, we have picked out some the best pictures of our mission so far.  I hope to get it completed tomorrow and then hung next week-end. There won't be any time between now and then to hang it.
One other wonderful thing: I now have a vacuum cleaner! We got it from one of the storage units. It was so nice today to vacuum our carpets instead of sweeping them down. It makes cleaning the apartment go much quicker.
Tomorrow we have to pick up three YSAs, we think. I also need to text several of the Bishop's appointments to remind them of their interviews. It will be a short Sunday morning, unfortunately. And at the end of the day when we contact the missionaries about inactive YSAs in Mississauga we will have some changes because of transfers. Oh, well it is all good. I look forward to the Sabbath and especially sacrament meeting tomorrow.
May all of you also look forward to an inspirational, edifying Sabbath Day.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Friday 23 October 2015

October 23, 2015

Bonnie: I thought I would start the blog tonight because Bob is listening to the Jays play Kansas City, while he eats a Neilsen's chocolate bar. We hope the Jays win tonight, but of course time will tell. It was a good day today, but full of interesting twists and turns. Baptism records keep coming in so it makes for lots of time on the computer. I'm also trying to talk to two sisters who have gone home, one about a package of hers that came after she left, and one who was sent a pair of shoes and work-out stuff that belong to a sister still here on her mission! I also had to take care of a huge mistake I made on a baptismal record--the man's last name is Michelle, and I thought it was "her" first name! So, I had to talk to SLC about that! I will have President Clayton sign another letter congratulating him on his baptism. I ordered name tags and then supplies at the LDS Online Store. I got a call from the Calgary Alberta Mission about an investigator that the missionaries there had been teaching. He has moved to Toronto. He has been seeing the missionaries since March. The Elders there wanted him to be invited to church this Sunday but they had no address, just a phone number. So, I contacted the APs who directed me to the Zone leaders in Toronto. They, in turn, will give the number to some Spanish speaking Elders. I am interested to know if he comes to church. Then, an Elder's driving permit came in. His current permit runs out Sunday, so he had to get the new one soon. The problem is he does not live close. So, we had to figure something out. Fortunately, Elder Barrett was there and he took it to Institute tonight and gave it to another teacher who lives in this Elder's ward. A tender mercy for sure! There are many tender mercies I see the longer that I serve. The Lord has really blessed me and the missionaries here.
May He bless all of you, as well!
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: Time out from the game. Blue Jays just blew a big chance. First 2 batters walk and then the next guy can't complete a bunt. The next guy hits a deep fly ball that would have scored a run if the previous batter could have put down a bunt. Third guy hit a rocket, but right at the 3rd baseman. Luckily the Jays pitcher is throwing rockets right now. Hope he keeps them in the game. He just struck out his 4th in a row.
Starting to look for apartments in another zone. 2 sisters went with the realtor tonight and found one that they like. I hope we can make an offer this weekend so we can get the sisters out of the dump they are in.
Weather is turning a little cooler for the weekend. Might get a bad case of 'cabin fever' this weekend as it's too cold to do anything outside. We might hit one of the outlet malls tomorrow.
I see that Magnolia beat up on Tyler pretty bad tonight. Valley won, but Paden City lost. A lot of points scored tonight by several teams.
Better close for the night. Love to all and good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Thursday 22 October 2015

October 22, 2015

Bonnie:  It was a good day today, especially because I got to go to the temple to do some initiatories. Bob has some names that we are working on. There are now 4 endowments for me to do and one for Bob to do. It will be great to work on these over the next little while.
Today, I was able to go through the bags of clothing we received at transfers. I found 10-12 skirts that I will give to Sister Clayton. And there were lots of winter scarves and gloves to add to my collection. All of the rest of it will go to Salvation Army or Good Will. It's lots of clothing.
I was also able to catch up on the baptism/confirmation records. It's already time to put together the baptism packets that we send to the new converts. There are lots of  baptisms here. The problem is following up and becoming friends with the new sisters and brothers and making them feel loved and a part of things. With the new direction of President Clayton it will happen. There is beginning to be a real coordinated effort between the missionaries and the ward council and ward members. It's certainly the way to go.
One other thing I want to share. I received a call today from a Stake President in Calgary who wanted to know if we had any missionaries who spoke Farsi/Persian. He had a missionary from his stake contact him from Armenia, I think, who has a Farsi family very interested in the gospel but no one to teach them in their language. He is contacting the President about skyping some missionary lessons to this family! This missionary heard that in Toronto there were missionaries who could do this. There are, and we know them. These are the young men who took us out to eat a while back! I love it!! I feel strongly that the gospel will be taught all over the world beginning in places like Toronto and Los Angeles where there are many cultures and languages. It is exciting to be part of it!
Happy evening to all.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: While Bonnie went to the temple I stayed at the office and worked on many items still lying around the office. When I thought I was done I remembered that it was time to clear up the credit card purchases for the month. We have a few recent ones still outstanding. But we have some over a month old that have not hit our credit cards yet. It seems that quite a few charges have been made, but they are not showing up on the cards. Don't know why that is. I parked the truck and trailer in our parking lot one night in August and paid with a credit card. It hasn't shown up. When we were in Temiskaming I bought some gas with our debit card and that charge never showed up. President Clayton purchased over $160 worth of blankets and sheets for the missionaries at a store and it has not shown up either. Elder Erickson has 2 or 3 car charges that aren't showing up. Maybe they'll come through at one time some day.
We thought we would be able to retire early tonight, but we have to wait for the CES couple to stop and pick up a blow-up bed for their son who is coming. Don't expect them to be here till sometime around 10:30 if we're lucky. The good thing is that it gives us plenty of time for the blog.
Better call it a night now. Everyone have a good Friday and great weekend. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Wednesday 21 October 2015

October 21, 2015

Bonnie:  Last night I was too tired to write anything. But, tonight, I have started before 10:15 pm to write so I'll be able to put down a few words. Yesterday and today were crazy busy. There are so many "little" things that the missionaries need, sometimes it's hard to remember everything. So, after a busy day yesterday with transfers and what seemed like a hundred missionaries in and out, in came the father of one of the missionaries going home the next day.  He was picking up his son in the morning and wanted to be sure he knew how to get to the office.  He came just before Bob and I were about to leave. When he finally left, I panicked because the office was so messy after transfers. There was a pile of empty boxes in one corner, and three huge bags of left-over clothing, plus about six pairs of boots in a pile in another corner. On top of that, our tender mercy jar of candy was covered with post-it notes, so many that they were falling off onto the floor and the top of the counter around my desk area. I knew they would be taking pictures and I wanted everything to look good. So, I made sure we were there a little bit early today so I could clean up some. I never did get to the clothing and boots, but I put them outside of the office in the foyer of the chapel temporarily. The boxes went into 120 and I took care of most of the post-it notes. Then, I have some sweet-smelling dusting spray that Sister Gillen left me that I used to clean up with. I'm so glad I did it. We witnessed a very special time when the parents came to pick up their missionary. It reminded me of some of the most precious moments I have had welcoming home my sweet sons and daughter from their missions. And, then, at the same time, another father and grand-father came by to pick up their son, too--a Christensen! The grand-father reminded me of my Dad in some ways. Maybe we're related! So, it was a very special morning. Then, later today a "visa-waiter" came in with the Clayton's. She may be here for month or longer, depending on when her visa is approved. She is a sharp YW from Montreal and will be a blessing to our mission, even though it may be for a short time. So, she  had to be given our introductory talks by each of the office senior missionaries. And then, an new Elder had to come in for his Canadian health card. So, that added to the day's activities.
I talked Bob into leaving early so we could have a relaxing night at home, and then he informed me that he had to take box-springs and a mattress to Kitchener because an Elder did not have a bed to sleep on. So, we did leave early, ate at Wendy's, (Bob's favorite place), and traveled about an hour to do the delivery. It went rather quickly, actually. Anyway, I'm glad to be home. We still have dishes in the sink from Monday, but they aren't much thankfully. (That's because I wash the dishes I'm going to use in the morning before breakfast. - Bob) Maybe we/Bob will get to them tomorrow night.
I hope all of you have had a bit more relaxing few days than I have! My love to all of you!
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: If you read Bonnie's comments carefully then you know what I contribute to housekeeping!!
The day went pretty well. We have 2 apartments under contract and turned down a third apartment. We are actually going to keep one of the apartments we intended to close. The landlord called and wanted us to stay. She said she would get the phone reception problem resolved for us. She called back this morning to tell me she has talked to the phone company. They sold her a device that is supposed to increase the phone signal reception in the apartment. So we are going to give it a try.
Now we will switch our attention from the North York Zone to the Ossington Zone. They have some of the worst apartments in my opinion. There are several apartments in high rise buildings. Most of the apartments have ongoing problems, including bed bugs and roaches. I want to get the missionaries out of those places and into some homes. Grace, the realtor that Elder Gillen found, has been a real asset. She is ready to move the other missionaries. So we'll go to work on it next week. I told Bonnie I want to give Grace a small gift with a Book of Mormon as a token of our appreciation for her efforts.
The trip to Kitchener tonight went fine. It drizzled just a little on us, but didn't affect the speed of traffic. Bonnie's email wasn't working on her phone so she actually talked some. It was a pleasant trip.
Time for bed (10:20). Wishing peace and happiness for everyone. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Tuesday 20 October 2015

October 20, 2015

Bob: This will have to be short tonight. We left at 7:15 this morning and didn't get home till just a few minutes ago. Had Institute tonight after dealing with transfers and apartments all day. We are closing one apartment and the landlord called up this evening almost in tears because the missionaries are leaving. Things just never seem to get easier.
We took one young man to Institute with us tonight. Takes some extra time to take him home. He lives fairly close to the office so picking him up wasn't an inconvenience, but the extra time getting home is a handicap for two old missionaries!! Don't think we had lunch today, but did have some pot pie for dinner. Weather warmed up some today and it was quite pleasant. Temperatures will start back down tomorrow though.
Going to bed as it's 10:32. Everyone have a good day tomorrow. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Monday 19 October 2015

October 19, 2015

Bob: Busy day in the office. Everyone was gearing up for transfers starting tomorrow. We have a short presentation at the Brampton Stake Center in the morning. And then after lunch the missionaries will start showing up at the office to pick up supplies, etc. with their new companions.
We stayed at the office till almost 7 so we could go directly to the FHE at the Stake Center. But we got a text to stop and pick up 2 YSA on the way. Couldn't find one, and they wouldn't open the door at the other house. City precaution I guess. Who is that strange man knocking on my door????
Well I am going to bed early. Everyone be good. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie: I am really tired tonight. But, I'm glad we went to the FHE lesson, where the teacher talked about "what I wish I knew before I started my mission". He opened it up to those who wanted to share something after he talked. It was great. We heard from lots of YSAs and ended with the Bishop and his wife. He was a mission president a few years ago. Anyway, it was an inspiring meeting.
Tomorrow we leave at 7:10 am to go to the Brampton Stake Center to introduce the new missionaries to the important things we do for them in the office. I have to figure out exactly what I'm going to say in Sister Erickson's place. I will be doing her presentation and mine tomorrow. And then comes crazy transfers! I wish we could go home early but Bob has made a commitment to attend Institute on Tuesday nights in Mississauga. So, we'll eat the rest of the  Costco chicken potpie that we had for dinner tonight at the office and go straight from there. I will be grateful to get home tomorrow night! And to have an earlier night Wednesday.
May everyone have a blessed day tomorrow, with many tender mercies from the Lord.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Sunday 18 October 2015

October 18, 2015

Bob: Pretty good day. Slept in again till almost 8:30. Don't know how I will make it up in the morning at 5:45. That will be a real challenge. Got a head start by taking a nap this afternoon for at least an hour.
Went to Mississauga today to pick up a YSA sister for church. When we took her back we stopped at the homes of a couple YSA members that haven't been attending. Found one at home and the other one was at work. We got a warm reception at each home so we'll stop again in a couple weeks.
Got our YSA updates done tonight except for the English sisters. Still waiting for their call, but the Z/L are making transfer calls tonight. That might interfere with our call!
We will be out late again tomorrow night and Tuesday. Also, Tuesday is transfer day and orientation for the arriving missionaries. Bonnie has to fill in for Sister Erickson on Tuesday because she has flown home to see her mother who is under hospice care. She and Elder Erickson will be travelling back to California when the funeral occurs.
Going to close for now. Hope everyone is doing well. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  I just got off of the phone with Jeff and family. I love talking to my children and grand-children! I hope all of them are well tonight.
It is transfers and, as Bob wrote, the APs are making the calls tonight. All of the missionaries are anticipating a phone call about what changes will be made.We are getting many new missionaries--I think between 12 and 19. We'll know tomorrow. It will mean lots of changes, which affects everything that we do in the office. I hope that I can cover for Sis. Erickson and not mess up anything. She is better on the computer than I am.
Church was good today. We had the high councilman speak and he talked about the atonement. Then, there were several interviews for the Bishop. Only one fell through and I will get him next week. Munch and Mingle was good--we had baked potatoes with toppings. Several of the men came back for seconds. I'm glad we were able to stop on the way home to see two more of our less-active YSAs--well, one was working as Bob wrote. We will feel comfortable going back in a week or two with an Institute brochure in hand.
Well, it is late and I need to retire. May everyone  have a wonderful week ahead!
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Saturday 17 October 2015

October 17, 2015

Bob: A pretty restful day. Woke up about 6 but went back to sleep and awoke about 8:10! Caught up on my sleep and haven't had a nap all day.
Had to make a trip to the office to send off another rent application. This is the 6th application we have sent for the same set of Elders. Landlords keep turning us down and there isn't anything we can do about it. I have been told that landlords cannot discriminate, but the word my realtor gets from her boss is it would be a waste of time to try to force anyone to rent because the Ontario Rental Board lets the landlords decide who they rent to. If they don't want to rent to you, then you won't get the rental.
Had the 3 A/P's, Brampton Z/L, and Laura over for a lasagna dinner tonight. That was fun, but a lot of work for the first mate.
Been trying to update our YSA list with the Bishop's comments from Tuesday night. We're right on top of it!!!(Only 5 days after the fact.)
Weather went the full circle today. At times it was bright and sunny outside even though it was only in the 30s. Other times it was dark and cloudy. Also got some snow flurries that I tried to take a picture of, but it didn't turn out. Had to turn up the thermostat today. First mate will be happier.
Good night everyone. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  It's been a great day! I've been able to accomplish a lot. And it was great to have the 5 Elders over with Laura. They gave a thought before they left about the Restoration and the need for prophets. It went seamlessly between the 5 Elders, with no planning ahead about who was to say what. I'm glad we had them over.
As Bob wrote, we are trying to figure out where to go next with the YSAs. The problem seems to be rides for many of them. We are picking up one tomorrow. We need to have their active peers bring them, but organizing that is a huge undertaking. More will be said about that in the Council meeting tomorrow according to our friends the Barretts, who attend that meeting. I hope so. Also, tomorrow I have 4 or 5 interviews set up with the Bishop. I'm sure that there will be some who will want to see him at the last minute as well. Such is the life of the Bishop's appointment secretary.
May all of you have a wonderful Sabbath day tomorrow. May what we do show our Savior how much we love and honor Him!
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Friday 16 October 2015

October 16, 2015

Bob: Pretty nice day at the office. Caught up on most everything. Made a run to the bank and to a vacuum shop to get a belt. Canadians sure love standing in the line at the bank. Always a line there and then it takes the teller forever to help you. I had the deposit of one check and $40 cash. I didn't know if she would ever get it done. The vacuum cleaner is up and ready to go, though.
After dinner we headed to Costco and then Walmart. Didn't get home till about 9:20. Listening to the Jays and the Royals. Toronto not doing too well right now.
Just checked the WV football scores and see that Magnolia beat St. Marys. Tyler beat one of the teams tied for 1st in single A rankings. Valley is ahead in the 3rd quarter. Paden City won.
Everyone have a great weekend. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  Today we celebrated Elder Marchant's last Friday at the office and Elder Forsyth's birthday.
We had  pizza with cake for dessert. It was all good! Tomorrow night we will have the three APs and the two Brampton Elders who live with them over for dinner. I'm planning on making lasagna, with salad and garlic bread. When we went to Costco tonight Bob wanted one of their "Tuxedo" Cakes. I'll admit they are good, but I wanted to make a brownie pudding cake for dessert tomorrow. I may do a small one anyway. I still have to do one or two errands tomorrow so that I am ready. But, at least we have nothing pressing during the day other than the cooking I will do.
The weather has turned cold today. At one point we saw hail pouring down! When we came home for a bite to eat I changed into my long-johns. Bob wore a sweat-shirt and a jacket. It really wasn't too bad if you stayed out of the wind. I hope all of the leaves won't be gone in the morning. It is so beautiful in places. The trees are finally changing colors here in Brampton.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful week-end.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Thursday 15 October 2015

October 15, 2015

Bob: Only worked till 6 today. I left the office at 12:15 to inspect an apartment with a landlord. She thought the place was immaculate. 4 Elders had spent all morning cleaning everything in the place per an instruction sheet left by the listing agent realtor. He said there was damage to the grout in the bathroom. Once the Elders cleaned it there was no damage at all. It looked like a new tile job. After we left I took all 4 of them to a fish and chips cafe just up the street. Elder Wilsher, being from England, liked that very much.
While we were eating I decided to go look at another apartment in another area that we are closing. The Zone Leaders had told me it was real grungy and couldn't be cleaned well. After seeing what had just been done by Elder Wilsher and his crew I thought I might send them up to clean it too. Well, when I got there I couldn't believe how bad it looked. The paint was coming off the walls everywhere. There were tape marks all over the walls too. There was sheetrock damage in 2 or 3 places. I had the Elders take me to the superintendent's office so we could get someone to inspect the damage. They sent 2 guys to look at it. They walked in, looked at all the rooms and said 'This place is pretty good. You don't have anything here to worry about!' I about fell over, but calmly asked if they were sure. They said they see much worse than this all the time and the paint coming off was a bad paint job to begin with. So we went back to the super and turned in the keys. She will bill us for a second set of keys that someone has lost.
Next thing on the agenda was to get back to the office. It was a little after 3, I believe, and I was in downtown Toronto near Chinatown. I got back at almost 5:00. There was a car wreck blocking the exit from 401 and route 410 was bumper to bumper for about 4 or 5 miles. Whoever said you can't get anywhere fast in Toronto after 3:00 is 100% correct.
Well I have rambled on long enough. Hope everyone is well. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  There was a temple session for the newest missionaries (here only 6 weeks) and their companion trainers today. I should have planned on several of them dropping by the office! It seems they always have to pick up a "few things" before heading home. I hope the supplies hold out until after transfers occur on Wednesday! It's hard trying to have everything that they need.
I spent a good part of the day rearranging the supply room that the ward has allowed us to use. It was kind of a mess, although I know where and what everything is. I'm working on getting the shelf brackets for a hallway closet so I can put things out there, too. We have three closets altogether plus the classroom. We need every bit of space we can find. It's really generous of the Creditview Ward to let us have this space. Eventually all I want in the classroom are all of the  Books of Mormon in all of the different languages and the English pamphlets. All other pamphlets I want on the shelves in the hall closets or in the office, where there are a few empty shelves. I succeeded in putting all of the Spanish materials inside the office, next to the supply shelves there. We have part of a whole wall with just Spanish supplies. I'm glad I found a place for those boxes.
I also have a picture of some of the missionaries who are close-by, but my I-pad is not working very well these days. I can't seem to email it to Bob so he can put it on the computer. Maybe I will go to church Sunday and have one of the YSAs play with my I-pad and fix it!!
It's time to turn in so I'll close. I love you all!

Mom/Bonnie

Wednesday 14 October 2015

October 14, 2015

Bonnie:  It's been a good day and I got to come home early with Erickson's. Bob had quite a bit to do. He got home about 8:30 tonight. It was nice just to putter around the house. Yesterday was totally crazy.  I was able to get some Elders to give a blessing that someone called about. And someone left two pairs of heavy winter gloves on my desk. When I asked the APs about it they didn't know who they belonged to. When I suggested that we give them to someone who needed them for the winter they knew exactly where they needed to go--to an Elder in Timmons, the farthest north in the mission, where it gets the coldest. There is an Elder there from the islands--Samoa or Tonga probably--who doesn't even have a coat yet. So, that's where they will go.
Transfers are coming up and one of our APs is going home :(  We will be having cake as our parting gift to him. I can't believe how close I feel to them! They are like my sons!! He will really be missed in the office. Anyway, I'm trying to be prepared for all of the changes that will come with transfers. We are getting about 20 new missionaries. Also, Sis. Erickson may be leaving for her mother's funeral soon. That means I have to be prepared to take over for her. She spent time with me this morning trying to teach me how to do the "Letters of Residency" which each missionary must have to use the public library on Mondays to email home. An important thing, of course. So, I have to get on IMOS, the church's internet system, do two mail merges to get the letters made up. There must be 10- 12 steps to it.  Each day I will practice until I totally can do it on my own. That's only a small part of what she does. I will have to have the Lord's help with this for sure. She is working ahead as much as she can. She takes care of all of the details for flights in and out for new and leaving missionaries and packets for all of them as well. She also organizes the temple trips, new convert ones, as well as the final temple session for the missionaries who are leaving. With the Lord's help I know I can do it, but it will be challenging. Well, I'll let Bob add his thoughts and then my PJs are calling me! Good night, everyone!

Mom/Bonnie

Bob: It was a long day, but not difficult. Usually on the 14th of the month I try to get the rent payments entered. That takes a while as I have to update some of the apartment payments due to rent increases, etc. There were about 15 of these adjustments that had to be made today. Once that is all done I run a report listing what the rents are for the current month. As a double check I compare the current month's rent with the previous month's rent and find out why there are any differences. Once the differences are reconciled I can enter the payments. Then tomorrow, if the President okays the payments I can print the checks and get them ready to mail. It takes a little time as there are about 80 checks to print and stick in envelopes. (Just checked IMOS and the President has okayed the payments. There are 72 checks to print, etc.) That will be first thing to do tomorrow.
Going downtown tomorrow to close another apartment. This one shouldn't be too bad. The missionaries have moved everything out. They are going over earlier tomorrow to clean it. The landlord and I will get there around 1:00 and then hopefully we can close the book on it.
It is a happy day in Toronto as their Blue Jays won their baseball game today to advance to the American League Championship series. People up here are passionate about their baseball team. I think they would support a NFL team without any problem.
Better get ready for bed. Love to all and good night brother.

Tuesday 13 October 2015

October 13, 2015

Bob: Been a long day. Had a normal day at the office and then we stopped at our apartment long enough to pick up jackets and headed to Mississauga. Had a meeting with the Bishop to discuss our results from the YSA blitz. He had some additional information that helps us know what direction to go with some of these young adults.
Only got to spend about 30 minutes in the Institute class. Some of these YSA have a great understanding of the principles of the gospel.
Weather is turning cooler and is going to get colder throughout the week. Nothing like the weekend we just had. But with it being October we can't complain. Bonnie has hope that the winter won't be too bad. The Bishop showed her a picture taken in his back yard at Christmas a couple years ago. No one had coats on and there wasn't any white stuff on the ground.
Got to go. Love to all. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie: Sorry but it's late and I'm going to bed. Sweet dreams, everyone!

Monday 12 October 2015

October 12, 2015

Bonnie:  It's been a delightful day, full of surprises for our first official Canadian Thanksgiving Day. We went to the office and Bob planned to work most of the day. Sister Erickson did not come in because she was saying good-bye to family that had come up. Elder Erickson said that after working part of the day, they were going to the "Turkey Bowl" held at the Clayton's from 1 to 3. So, Bob decided that we would go, too. It was great fun to watch them playing soccer. The two zones each had their own team, so it was quite the rivalry. The  Sister Missionaries played, too, and one of them gave up a soccer scholarship to go on a mission. You can bet she was great on the field! Then, Brother Barrett showed up and invited us all to his house for Thanksgiving dinner tonight. He had invited several of the missionaries and three YSAs also. I went home from the Turkey Bowl determined to make a blueberry pie to take. It turned out ok, except that my oven is too hot so the crust was burned a little. The rest of it tasted good, though. So, we had another delicious turkey dinner tonight. Bob is taking one of the young men  home as I write. It's been a very good week-end. Tomorrow morning we need to be there a little bit early, because a new Elder is coming to our mission. The training we will do will be at the Mission Office so that will work well. Then, we will have our weekly meeting with the Clayton's, followed by our usual day. We will eat dinner at the mission office and then go straight to our meeting with Bishop Fuller and then to Institute after that. It will be a full day but a good one, I'm sure. I hope everyone's day is full in good ways tomorrow, too!
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: Been a good day topped off with a another wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. I am beginning to feel a little like the 'stuffed' turkey!
I think the Turkey Bowl went well accept for one Elder getting a toe nail ripped off. Other than that just some sore muscles. After the soccer game, which was won by the Brampton Zone, the Weston Zone prevailed in the regular football game. A few of the Elders looked like pretty good athletes. And the one Sister was excellent with the soccer ball.
Took Shawn home after dinner. He lives about 5 miles away. Made one wrong turn coming back, but quickly recovered. Added a couple miles to my trip.
Tomorrow promises to be a long day. Might not have been the best idea to schedule the appointment with the Bishop on this night, but too late to back track now. All this means Wednesday may be a real long day. Saturday fishing pictures are below.
Well I had better get to bed. Love to all and good night brother.

October 11, 2015

Bob: We apologize for not writing on the blog last night, but it was very late once we finished a game of Mexican Train. We only made it to double 4s and had to quit because it was late.
Got to go fishing with Karl yesterday. We went to 'No Name' Lake. It is on the map, but without a name. It is on the way to Cooke Lake. Had to paddle up a very shallow stream and then get out and drag the canoe the last 150 feet to get to the lake. We were there about 3 hours and caught 8 pike. Brought 5 home and threw 3 back so they could grow up. Didn't hook on to any real big ones. I would think the biggest was about 26 inches. Got a picture of it on my old phone but it is dead as a door nail right now. I'll try to get the picture posted tomorrow.
We had a great Thanksgiving dinner with the Jakob's yesterday. Karl's brother and his wife also came. Once we got everything cleaned up the 6 of us played Mexican Train. It was fun.
Church was very good today. The Bishop of the Mississauga Ward, who we need to report our YSA findings to, was also visiting the Temiskaming Branch today. I think there were about 30 there. After church we had lunch with Brad. He is so kind to us. Always offers to let us stay at his house. Wants to feed us after church if no one else offers. He is just a good, good, guy. His oldest daughter will graduate this year. She is getting ready to apply to BYU and also going to submit her mission papers when she is approaching 19. She is determined to do both. We'll see how it works out.
The drive up and back was very beautiful especially between Huntsville and North Bay. We stopped several times today and took some more photos, but I don't think they are any better than the 2 I posted Friday. Took a picture of Jakob's house from across the Montreal River in Elk Lake. It's below. Can't see much of the house, but you can get an idea how close they are to the river. Took another picture of the house from the driveway. It is below too.
Hope everyone had a beautiful Sabbath. Good night to all and good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie: We have had a wonderful time with the Jakob's this week-end. One thing that is common for Canadian's to serve is turnips at their Thanksgiving meal, but we had so much other food that Patsy didn't make them. I would like to have tried them! She served a ham and a turkey. Instead of serving sweet potatoes separately, she cooked them with the white potatoes. It was very good and more colorful, of course. We also had Mormon "wine" which is cranberry juice, apple juice and grape juice with ginger ail. It's delicious! With all of the food the Jakob's had left over they will have a full freezer of good things to eat for quite awhile to come. Bob included pictures of their house, which is almost 100 years old. It's on some beautiful land, right on the river. Saturday while the  men fished, we took the three little foster children and went for a walk. It was a bit cool but very enjoyable. The men came back right after they left, however, because they had forgotten to take their poles!! I'm glad they caught lots of fish, but the "big" one remains to be caught!
Well, we have heard from all 4 sets of missionaries about our less-active YSAs and it is getting late so we are off to bed! Happy fall, everyone!

Mom/Bonnie

Friday 9 October 2015

October 9, 2015

Bob: Arrived safe and sound in Elk Lake around 6:30.We didn't get out of Brampton till about 9:30 because of the flat tire, but that worked out well. Ended up buying a used tire for a spare. We made a couple of stops on the way. One was in Huntsville at our favorite Dairy Queen and another near Gravenhurst for gas. Drove through some beautiful fall colors. Took a few pictures. These were both taken when we stopped in Huntsville.
The weather is definitely cooler up here. Wore my unlined Columbia jacket about all day. I hope it warms up a little tomorrow and the rain holds off. If not it might be a little uncomfortable on the lake when we go fishing.
Well I am going to close and get to bed. All of us are sitting around yawning our heads off. Love to all and good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  Patsy and I will be busy tomorrow cooking. She is planning dinner for about 5:00. The three little girls that Patsy and Karl are fostering are sweet little girls. And we love Jenn. I'm glad she is still here with Karl and Patsy. Karl's brother and his wife will also be here tomorrow for dinner. I just hope that we can go for a walk to see the beautiful trees and I'll be happy.
May tomorrow be a wonderful day for everyone!

Mom/Bonnie

Thursday 8 October 2015

October 8, 2015

Bonnie: It's late tonight but we have been very busy! Bob had to change a tire because I ran over something on the way home from shopping. He also did the wash, so he has been a very busy husband! It was a busy, kind of frustrating day. The new referral system is not working well because the missionaries do not receive the texts. We have received a very special referral, the sister/daughter of some friends of one of the temple couples who are from Calgary. The family is from Iran and they want their daughter to hear about the gospel. They were supposed to see  her last week, but never got the referral. So, I called the missionaries directly. They have an appointment Saturday! This is one situation where the new Farsi Book of Mormon will be excellent. Apparently, she knows something about the gospel and is very interested in it. The gospel is going to all the world, right before our very eyes!
May everyone have a wonderful week-end. We will be celebrating the Canadian Thanksgiving with our friends in Elk Lake. We are leaving tomorrow morning.
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: Not much going on at work today. Still looking for apartments and we have apartments to close. Never seems to end. Got most of the accounting caught up and worked on the budget today. Need to get President Clayton's approval on it now.
Looking forward to leaving early tomorrow, but will have to check on a tire first. I think the spare is okay for the one she put the hole in, but I will need to get a spare. A guy on the elevator told about a tire shop that is pretty close. They open at eight and I want to be there when they open.
Better close and get to bed as it is almost 11. Baseball playoffs started and the local team didn't do too well. Toronto got beat. Pittsburgh got beat yesterday by the Cubs. The Pirates and Cubs had the 2nd and 3rd best records in all of baseball and had to play each other where one was going to be one and done. Doesn't seem quite right, but that is the way the cookie crumbles.
Good night and love to all. Good night brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Wednesday 7 October 2015

October 7, 2015

Bonnie:  It's been a good day. I left early and got my hair cut, and finally I found a hair-dresser that agrees with me about how to do my hair! I will try to go back to her. We went through the clothes in the closet yesterday and most of it went to the Salvation Army. The only things I have left are winter boots and a bin of gloves and hats for the Elders and Sisters. Sister Clayton now has all of the coats and all of the skirts. We will take these things to zone conference in November to see if anyone wants them. We also had a few ties and laid them out today on a first come, first serve basis. Half of them are already gone. In fact, this  morning one Elder saw some we had thrown away and he went through them and took several! So, I now have room in one of the closets for supplies. The problem is that I ordered 3 braille Book of Mormons, one for an investigator and two to have on hand. I had no idea how big they are. Each "book" comes in a huge box and consists of 8 volumes, each volume the size of a very thick picture album! So my extra space will all be filled up braille Books of Mormon.
Tonight,we are thinking about what we need to take to Elk Lake this week-end. It will be a fun trip even though I have to talk on Sunday. It will be a nice break from our usual routine.
My hope is that all of us are enjoying a little bit of warmth before the winter hits. We need to enjoy the beautiful colors and mild weather while it lasts. My love to all.

Bob: Went apartment hunting with a realtor today. Found a couple that could work, but we're going to look at 4 more tomorrow. Then we'll put in an offer. Hope we get someone to take the offer. The problem I see is that I won't be around Friday to sign the papers for the offer. Better check this out in the morning with the realtor.
One good thing happened today. The landlord that is in England got my email and contacted his sons. One of them came over and took care of the toilet problem. Time will tell if it is a permanent fix.
Another beautiful fall day. Probably got into the 60s for part of the day. It has been very pleasant the last couple of days.
Better get to bed. Hope everyone had a great day. Good night brother.

Dad/Bob

October 6, 2015

Bob: Very interesting day. There were apartment problems all day long. First of all, the Elders in Orillia called and said their commode was back flowing with #@^%$$!! Told them to call the landlord, who lives in the other half of the duplex. They said they couldn't. He is in England!! So they called the city. The city came out and said it wasn't their problem. So there we sit. Can't use the facilities so the Z/L are busy getting them a temporary place to stay.
Called the Sisters who have roaches everywhere. The owner and super came up and looked around and said, yes, the apartment needs fumigated. We'll get it done a week from Thursday!! I called the super back and of course she couldn't come to the phone. Had the sisters pack up and move out. Instructed them to tell the super when the roaches were gone they would be back. Called the super back and she still couldn't talk. So I told the other receptionist to give the super a message that I would not be sending any rent for the days the Sisters couldn't use their apartment. We'll see how that shakes out next month.
Still looking for an apartment for the Farsi Elders. Have about 4 apartments to look at in the morning with the realtor. I'm sure some of them will be alright, but the landlord doesn't have to rent to you if he doesn't want.
Believe me, Institute was a welcome break tonight. The class did not have any silent moments. The young men were all willing to offer something about what was being discussed. It was good.
Well, the first mate is about to fall asleep. Got to put her in bed. Love to everyone and good night brother.

Bonnie:  We had a great class at Institute tonight. They had lots of material to cover and did a great job doing it. I'm glad we went.
I have noticed small miracles on our mission. Another one happened today. Yesterday I ordered a French Triple Combination for President Clayton. (He went on a mission to Quebec and is now teaching someone who speaks French. President also said at our meeting that part of Quebec may be put into our mission soon.) I also ordered some English materials for one of the missionaries who is from France and would like to learn English better. The French Triples and the English materials came today! That's about 24 hours from Salt Lake City to Brampton, Ontario!! It's a miracle for sure. I haven't had a chance to text the President because we went straight from the office to Institute, but I will shortly. I think he will be as surprised as I was.
I'm going to let Bob finish up. I'd like a good night's rest tonight. I am so tired when I have to get up in the morning. Maybe it will help if I go to bed a little earlier.
May all of our loved ones have a good night's rest, too!

October 5, 2015

Bonnie:  We just got home from our monthly dinner at Ludlow's. It was a complete Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, stuffing, rolls, mashed potatoes and pie for dessert. Sis. Ludlow goes all out to decorate each month. I loved how she decorated the tables for Fall. It was nice to have a break from YSA Family Home Evening, too. I love being with the other Senior couples. It's kind of like our Home Teaching/ Visiting Teaching for the month!
We will go directly from the office to Mississauga Chapel tomorrow night to meet with the Beltran's who are helping us with the Spanish less-active YSAs. It's time to get finished with our list, if we can. That will be followed with Institute. It will be a long but worthwhile day, I think I am fairly caught up with the office assignments that I have. We will have a meeting with the President, however, so that may change tomorrow! It's going to be busy Wednesday and Thursday nights because we have to prepare for our trip. Wednesday I will get my hair cut and we will do the wash. Thursday night we will do the shopping and pack so we can leave by 9 Friday morning. It will be good to get out of the city for a few days.
May we enjoy our Family Home Evenings tonight.  Our families are what it's all about! How I love our family!

Mom/Bonnie

Bob: It is good to have a plan!! I can see my evenings in front of me the rest of this week. I think we will get everything done.
Apartments got crazy today. Some have bed bugs and some have roaches!! Uck. In each case, the missionaries have not done the proper steps to get rid of them. Their answer is just move. Well, we'll get the landlords involved and see after that. Should get both apartments fumigated the next day or two. Then we'll see if they need to move.
Turned out to be a rather nice day. Wasn't real warm, but it wasn't real cold either. A sweater over the standard white shirt did the trick. But I think I'll take something a little heavier to Elk Lake on Friday. Bonnie gasped when saw my comment about snow flakes on Sunday morning.
It was nice at Ludlow's tonight. It is always fun to sit around and listen to what the couples are experiencing in their individual callings. Kind of like a bunch of veterans sitting around telling their own war stories.
Well, I got to go. Love to everyone and good night brother.

October 4, 2015

Bob: What a glorious day it has been. Got to watch both sessions of conference. Heard from the 3 new apostles and each one did fine. There were some great messages. We just need to keep on trying, and everything will work out. The sad note of the day was how weak President Monson appears to be. His talk was a little over 13 minutes long and be was barely able to finish it. He appeared almost ready to collapse. I hope he is doing okay.
Weather was a little warmer today. Looking at the forecast for this weekend in Elk Lake I see 49 Friday and 53 Saturday. It may be a little cold on the lake. Sunday however is a different story. High is supposed to be 41 with snow showers in the morning. Looks like we need to take some warm clothes with us.
Bonnie and I walked about half way around the block before we ate this evening. (Had to work up an appetite as Sister Erikson had all kinds of snacks and goodies while we watched conference with them.) Bonnie fixed some corn chowder. It was very tasty especially with the Red Lobster biscuits.
Not much else going on today. Hope everyone's Sabbath was a day of rest. Good night to all and good night brother.
Love
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  It has been a wonderful day. There were some excellent talks. I think there will be a new word added to our "Mormon" vocabulary: ponderizing! I, like Bob, wonder about President Monson. He looked so frail at the end of his talk. We may be in for some more changes, although I hope not, at least for awhile. One of the best thoughts that came to me loud and clear is the idea of "intentional" parenting. I think that's an excellent, very needed way to teach children and young people in today's wicked world.
I just finished talking to 4 sets of missionaries about their work with the inactive YSAs. It's frustrating that there are so many that are not home when the missionaries stop by. We need to continue to pray for them, that's for sure.
It's already late so I will sign off. May everyone have a glorious week!

Mom/Bonnie

October 3, 2015

Bob: What a relaxing day listening to General Conference. We went to Walmart the first thing this morning, but have spent the rest of the day inside out of the cold weather. I did take the time to go for a walk outside. I had to wear a hooded sweatshirt and a jacket because of the wind. Without the wind it wasn't too bad, but the wind sent chills through me.
It was a real blessing to be able to stay at home and watch all 3 sessions of conference today. I think this is the first day since I got to Canada that I haven't shaved. Will probably have to clean up tomorrow morning as we are going to go watch Sunday Conference with the Erickson's. I can't go out looking like a bum!!
Conference was great although I didn't take many notes. Tried to listen more for the remarks that seemed intended for me. It was a historical day seeing 3 new apostles called. I remember when they called Elders Uchtdorf and Bednar the same day. Other than that I only remember one being called at a time. After the 2nd session of conference we were able to watch the 3 of them in a joint interview with the news media. None of the 3 knew who the other 2 were until there names were announced in Conference. They said that most of their families didn't even know of their calls.
Hope everyone is happy and doing well. I hope everyone knows how really blessed we are. Our mission assignments are becoming more routine and less spontaneous which is a blessing in our lives. Good night to one and all especially brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob

Bonnie:  It has been a good day. There were several wonderful talks. One I liked was the talk by Elder Larry Lawrence. If you remember, he asked all of us tonight when we pray to ask the Lord what is keeping us from progressing. And then to wait for an answer. Also, Elder Robert D. Hales mentioned something that Grandpa Keyes used to tell Kevin: to "straighten up and fly right!" It was a great talk to the YSA's. And, Mothers, who could not shed a tear of two in hearing Elder Holland's talk about the love of mothers. I really appreciated that talk! I'm not familiar with the new apostles, except that Chris texted me that Elder Renland was the one who interviewed him about working at BYU. I'm so grateful for our Prophet and all of the apostles! We are so blessed! Tomorrow will be wonderful, as well. I'm going to take some humis, my newest favorite treat, with crackers and veggies to the Erickson's.  Bob will also take crackers and some cookies that were on sale this morning at the Metro. In the morning I will work on the talk I have to give next Sunday when we go up north for the Canadian Thanksgiving at Jakob's. This has been a very nice break from the usual routine.
May all of us get our questions answered as we listen to the rest of conference tomorrow!

Mom/Bonnie

Friday 2 October 2015

October 2, 2015

Bob: Pretty good day at work. Left with my desktop just about empty. Got part of the phone/text report done. Now I just have to figure out a way to print it so it's brief and shows the President what he wants.
We left just before 5 today. Closed up the shop a little early. Stopped at RD's Southern BBQ for going home and then onto the temple. 3 of the YSA singles were in the session with us. It was nice having them there.
In the dressing room I got to talking with another brother. He said he was President Clayton's secretary in the Mission Presidency. He said that he used to get a list of the missionaries just after each transfer, but he hasn't gotten one since May!! Told him that's when the mission office changed both couples and that we would try and get him a copy sent out ASAP. He said he could ask President Clayton about getting a copy. I suggested he do that and then President Clayton would let us know where to send it. I figure this will come up in Tuesday morning's meeting.
Weather was kind of cool today. Never got out of the 50s. Had to wear a sweater to the office. Tonight I wore my Columbia coat without the liner over the sweater. Saw a lot of people bundled up in winter coats today. Don't know what they'll do when it gets real cold.
Saw that Magnolia and Valley both won their games tonight.
Put a picture of Bonnie below. It is actually a little cooler at her desk. I think it is because she is right next to the door.
Bonnie's first social security check came today. I hope it is the one for September because her regular payday is the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
Love to all. Good night, brother.

Dad/Bob

Bonnie at her desk with her 'heater' on

Bonnie:  It was a very good day today. The gift card for that Elder came first thing this morning. I was glad about that. I was able to catch up on several things which was good. The best part was going out to eat and then catching a temple session. We really like RDs. The slaw is delicious and the bar-be-qued meat is out of this world!
As Bob said we saw several YSAs at the temple tonight. Evan got his endowment about 1 month ago and tries to go every week. He is the home-teacher of Thomas, who has had a hard time making friends. Evan said that when they went home teaching his partner felt impressed to ask Thomas when he had attended the temple last. It had been about a year. So, they invited him to go tonight with Evan.Thomas lives about two hours away in Barrie, so it's quite an effort for him to come to the temple. I really love how the YSAs try to take care of each other. They really are a loving and accepting  bunch of young adults.
Well, it's late and we have lots to do in the morning before conference at noon. I'm sure that the first session will have lots and lots of people watching it! I pray for President Monson and all of the apostles as they call the new ones. May we love them and follow them!

Mom/Bonnie

Thursday 1 October 2015

October 1, 2015

Bonnie:  It was cool this morning as we went to the office. I'm glad I had on an extra layer. My desk is in an area that is always cooler than the rest of the office, so I make good use of the heater! It really helps. I went home with the Erickson's so Bob could work late. He got home about 7:30 tonight. It worked out well because I had the wash almost completely done by the time he got home.  I heard today from the Bishop that sent a $500 gift card to one of the Elders that got lost. He called and said that someone had the card and spent the money! But, he is sending another one that should come tomorrow by the same delivery service. I pray it gets here ok. I'm not sure I trust the delivery company! We'll see what happens. I also worked on referrals today. They have changed the system and I'm not sure I like how it's done now. In fact, I will be calling Salt Lake tomorrow with my questions. It seems harder to do in some ways.
May you all enjoy the lovely fall weather--
Love,
Mom/Bonnie

Bob: Very productive day at work. Got caught up on almost everything. Tomorrow I will be able to spend some time trying to put together the phone/text report. Had to leave the office for about an hour today or I would have been able to start the report today.
Bonnie is right about the weather. It is cooler. Almost needed a jacket today. When I was out it was above cold. I stayed in the sun so I was okay. Tomorrow I'll need a sweater if it doesn't warm up. High is supposed to be 56. I see Lindon is 81. How would it be!! Hope it warms up next weekend when we are in Temiskaming.
We have been trying to get Bonnie signed up to receive social security benefits. We thought it was all set up to start on the 2nd Wednesday of September, but it didn't. We called about it and they said they needed a voided check to start it. In June when she signed up they said they had the check and everything was okay. We specifically remember that because they had requested a voided check for a Canadian bank. We had to call Baltimore about that and explain that although we were in Canada we wanted the check deposited to our US bank. So she checked our records and verified that they had our account and we did not need to send anything. The wheels of the government never seem to turn smoothly. There always seems to be a wobble to them. I signed onto Bonnie's social security account tonight and it says her next payment will be made Oct 2. We will see tomorrow.
Well I'm signing off for tonight. Hope baby Lucas is letting Lori get some rest. Matter of fact, I hope all our grandchildren are blessing our children's lives with rest, peace and comfort. Good night all and good night, brother.
Love,
Dad/Bob
